The Board of Directors of OLE Ghana held its inaugural meeting Friday, February 22nd. The Board unanimously accepted the Constitution for OLE Ghana, appointed Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah as the Exectuive Director, accepted the Memorandum of Understanding between OLE Ghana and the OLE Secretariat and authorized the filing of a formal application for incorporation as a social benefit organization in Ghana.

| OLE Ghana is committed to working closely with the Ghanaian government ministries and the private and social benefit sectors to achieve a high quality Universal Basic Education in Ghana by 2015. This will involve establishing a free online Ghana National Kids Library with open educational resources needed for k-12 teachers and students and ensuring access to teacher development programs and these educational materials throughout Ghana. The OLE Secretariat will provide an initial investment of US$50,000 to assist in the startup process. OLE Ghana has also submitted a major proposal to the MTN Foundation for support of a program to help the more than 20,000 teachers in Ghana who have not yet received their teaching diploma. Dr. Richard Rowe, Chair of the Open Learning Exchange, Inc. and Robyn Gordon, Adviser to OLE on Sub-Saharan Africa, attended the board meeting in Accra. They also joined Professor Mensah in discussions concerning the launch of OLE Ghana and its goals with the Canadian High Commissioner, the USAID Mission Director and Education Director and the director of DFID, the UK economic and social development agency. Dr. Rowe also attended a press conference between US President Bush and Ghanaian President Kufuor and was able to speak with Preident Kufuor about OLE Ghana. Upon hearing about OLE Ghana and Professor Mensah’s new role as ira Exectuive Director, President Kufuor expressed enthusiams for OLE Ghana and added his high confidence in Professor Mensah and great appreciation for the contributions he has made to improving the quality of education in Ghana. |
